Gas permeable contact lenses
Gas permeable lenses stem from the original ‘hard’ lenses from the 70’s and 80’s. Hard lenses, because of the material they were made from and their design, were often difficult to adapt to.
Those that did adapt however, are still reaping the benefits from their usage, these benefits being:
- Very inexpensive lens running costs
- Very long life span and hence no need for frequent replacement
- Easy to use solutions
- Less risk of possible infection problems
Modern gas permeables still give all these benefits, with the added advantage of faster adaption time (3 to 4 days being a common period) and modern ‘super’ oxygen permeable lenses.
They correct a wider range of prescriptions than soft lens can do, and often give clearer vision.
They are good for dry eyed patients as well as eyes with certain types of pathology.
